ABSTRACT

Introduction Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection appears in 1 % to 3 % of patients with congenital heart disease, as an isolated anomaly in 67 %. This study shows our surgical repair results and its relationship with venous connection type, during 24 years.
Method A descriptive study was conducted with transversal cut, which included those patients operated on complete anomalous drainage of pulmonary veins in the period from august -1986 through august- 2010. Variables studied were: type of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, age, surgical technique, closure of vertical vein, surgical complications and mortality.
Result A 120 patients were underwent repair of TAPVC, 53 with supracardiac type, and 14 infracardiac type. Mortality was higher in newborn and infants and patients with infracardiac type. Mortality was 26,6 %.
Conclusions The total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage is today a challenge for surgery in the first year of life.
