ABSTRACT
Objective: Using in vitro testing to determine the
tensile strength and degree of resistance to fracture
from vertical and lateral forces of teeth restored using
different types of anchoring.
Hypothesis: There is a relationship between root
fracture and the root-post system chosen for
restoration.
Methods: We randomly selected 42 single-root teeth
with similar characteristics and divided these into three
groups, which were subjected to root-canal treatment
prior to removal and restoration using cast-metal NPG
posts, reinforced Rely X Fiber Post (3M ESPE) and
Para Post Fiber Lux (Coltčne/Whaledent) fiberglass
resin-post systems, depending on the group. All of the
samples were subjected to the corresponding strength
tests: vertical and lateral traction, up to the breaking
point, i.e., when ejection and/or fracturing of the
dental organ, core, and post occurs..
Results: Upon the application of lateral and vertical
forces, teeth restored using Rely X fiber posts how
greater resistance to fracture than those restored with
cast post-and-core and Fiber Para Post Lux.
Conclusions: Though more difficult to dislodge from
the conduit, teeth restored with a cast post-and-core
system did not prove resistant to vertical and lateral
forces, whereas those restored using fiberglass post
systems showed better results.
