ABSTRACT

Introduction: The diagnosis of benign monomelic amyotrophy is difficult because it is a rare disease with a clinical presentation that can mimic other diseases and motor neuron is basically the diagnosis of exclusion. Their identification is important to establish a proper management and prognosis. Case presentation: Male 62, begins with pelvic limb weakness and atrophy, with a time to progression of symptoms of two years, followed by a stationary period, in which the symptoms were limited to only one pelvic limb. Initially considered amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which sets a poor prognosis for life, but after the presentation box analysis and electromyographic findings the final diagnosis was benign monomelic amyotrophy. Discussion: Our patient had a variable motor neuron disease that can confuse the diagnosis and therefore the prognosis. Know the differences and identify benign monomelic amyotrophy is essential for timely and appropriate management of patients.
