ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was to begin the recollection of information regarding the operation, treatment and efficiency of self-help groups as well as from their patients. Initially, information was obtained by reviewing patients’ records from two different self-help organizations. The obtained data was subsequently used to track down and telephonically interview 105 tutors of these patients. Results showed answers to the interviews were frequently contradictory. The results also showed that the different groups and centers operated in different ways, and their procedures, ethic work and effectiveness are heterogeneous. Additionally, the data showed that the groups provided insufficient information to the tutors regarding patients’ treatment procedures. The data showed high indexes of physical and emotional mistreatment of patients, and that an important number of them escape from these groups. Lastly, the data showed self-help groups have began to treat patients with behavior and health problems not related to addictions.
