ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study was to determine the existence of relationships between exposition to violence across different stages of life and the level of self-esteem in 200 pregnant women. The women completed the Survey of Exposure to Community Violence-Parent Report and the Coopersmith Self- esteem Inventory. While most women reported minor to moderate exposure to violence, a low but important percentage of them experienced severe violence. Also most women showed a satisfactory level of self-esteem. However, those with previous exposure to severe violence showed a lower level of self-esteem. These results support the notion that the exposition to violence in different stages of life may predict lower levels of self-esteem.
