Primary amelanotic melanoma of oral cavity. Presentation of a clinical case

ABSTRACT

Melanoma is a malignant neoplasm that originates from melanocytes. It may arise de novo or from any previous melanocytic lesion. It may present both in the skin and mucous membranes, being the former the most common. Exposure to UV rays is related to its origin; however, this factor is not related with oral lesions. Melanoma usually presents as an asymmetric lesion, with irregular borders, color variation (brown, black, white, red or blue depending on the amount and depth where the melanin is located), and a diameter greater than 6 mm. Within the oral cavity this is a lesion that may present a significative size. We report the case of an amelanotic melanoma in the oral cavity and its surgical treatment.
