ABSTRACT
In the scenario of renal transplantation, the documented seroprevalence of human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) detailed in international studies at transplantation is 6.4 to 8%.
Objective: To investigate the pretransplant prevalence and postransplant incidence of IgG antibodies
versus HHV-8 in a group of renal transplant donors/recipients.
Materials and methods: For 72 donor/recipient couples: demographic characteristics, time and type of dialysis, history of blood transfusions, immunosuppression regimen and induction therapy were documented. Pretransplant and postransplant (›1 year, 48 receptors) serum samples were collected from donors and recipients, analyzing the presence of IgG antibodies
versus HHV-8 by ELISA.
Results: Donors: antibodies
versus HHV-8 seroprevalence 0% (mean age 35.7, 20-61 years; M:F, 1:1). Recipients: antibodies
versus HHV-8 seroprevalence 1/72 = 1.38%, IC 95%: 0.0 - 4.07 (mean age 31.5, 16-59 years; M:F, 2:1; 98.6% living donor; peritoneal dialysis 50%, mean 15 months [2-42]; hemodialysis 28%, mean 9 months [1-30]; dual dialysis therapy 11%, anticipated transplant 11%, blood transfusions 47%). Postransplant incidence: antibodies
versus HHV-8 0%; 48 recipients (time postransplant 30.7 + 17 months; blood transfusions 73%; functional graft 100%; triple immunosuppression 87.5%; induction with anti-CD25 4.1%).
Conclusions: The HVH-8 seroprevalence in renal donors and recipients (pretransplant and postransplant) documented in this study is significantly lower than the reported rate in other similar international studies.
