ABSTRACT

Acute monoarthritis is a disease that often requires examination at the emergency room and is an important part of the rheumatologist outpatient consult. Among the many causes of acute monoarthritis it is very important to identify the patients whom have septic arthritis because of the high morbidity of this disease. The main etiologies of acute monoarthritis are trauma, crystal deposition arthritides, septic arthritis and monoarticular onset in early forms of systemic diseases. Clinical record and physical examination contribute with valuable clues in order to reach an accurate diagnosis, however, it has been demonstrated that the sensitivity and specificity of clinical findings are not enough, being necessary lab work up and moreover synovial fluid analysis.
