ABSTRACT

Cardiac tamponade is usually a consequence of increased pericardial pressure with accumulation of pericardial effusion. Pericardial effusion may be caused by acute pericarditis, tumor, uremia, hypothyroidism, trauma, cardiac surgery, or other inflammatory/non inflammatory conditions. In this article we describe a patient with septic shock who developed cardiac tamponade. We review the pathogenesis and clinical and hemodynamic diagnosis of pericardial tamponade, focusing on the diagnostic utility of echocardiography.
