ABSTRACT

The Master’s Program in Psychology at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México includes the Residence in Systemic Family Therapy whose main goal is the training of family therapist through the development of theoretical, clinical, methodological, research, ethical competencies, as well as relational and social compromise. At this training program, it is relevant to focus the therapeutic relationship between therapists and consultants in order to give feedback to the professional practices, with responsibility and ethical behavior. This research is based in the Social Representations Theory proposed by Moscovici, as well as some principles of systemic, cybernetic and social constructionism perspectives. The goals of this study were to understand the representations and representational changes of the post graduate students at the Systemic Family Program, in order to promote training programs that will reach adequate therapeutic practices. A second goal was to observe if there were differences between students that are initiating or ending the training program. The study focused on qualitative methodology, which consisted in individual interviews and focus groups, applied to twenty students of the Masters in Psychology Program: Residence Systemic Family Therapy. The results showed differences in the representations of the therapeutic relationship between students that are starting their studies at this program in comparison with those who have clinical experience, supervision and theory seminars. The conclusions of this study shows that the representations of the therapeutic relationship are associated to the epistemological perspectives, the psychologist roles considered as traditional, supporting, assisting, educational or guidance. Representations change according to the more experience in theoretical models, to a more empathic bond with consultants, to the recognition of his own participation in the system. The knowledge of representations will allow the understanding of his influence in the therapeutic process and in the training of therapists.
