ABSTRACT

Introduction. All surgical intervention causes emotional reactions before such experience. Objective. Compare pediatric patients receiving Psychological Preparation Program (PPPS) with those who don’t. Material and methods. Twenty nine patients, between 4 to 15 years old, and their relatives, randomly chosen, were given coping, information and supporting techniques on feelings expression as a PPPS. The free drawing and human figure tests were applied to them and to another group of 29 patients, who did not receive this preparation, 3 to 6 h after their surgery. These tests, mark as anxiety indicators: size, stroke and dehumanized drawing. Other indicators were evaluated such as colors, drawing structure and theme. Results. 91% of patients depicted a drawing related to hospital theme. Patients with PPPS showed less anxiety indicators and structure on their drawings. Patients with no preparation had a higher number of indicators and a lower number of patients with structure. In the 12-15 year old group, only one had over 2 indicators. Conclusions. The PPPS provides emotional benefits to operated patients, because it could decrease post-op anxiety levels and prevent emotional unbalance. As well as, the chronological age could influence on anxiety management and the patient’s emotional structure.
