ABSTRACT

Objective. Show the neuropsychological findings in patients with NSMD, pre and post neurosurgical treatment at INCan between 2009-2010. Material and methods. In eleven patients with NSMD were practiced neurosurgical metastasectomy. Preoperative and postoperative neuropsychological assessment was performed. Also RTOG prognostic factors, Karnofsky performance status (KPS), anxiety- depression and the Barthel ADL status were evaluated. The variables were: level of consciousness, orientation, attention spam, language, constructional ability, memory, calculation skills, reasoning/ judgment, neurosurgical prognostic factors, anxiety-depression, and activities of daily living autonomy. Results. We find a 1.17 to 12.03 months survival range (average 6.03) with nine alive patients at check day. The cognitive functioning show improvement in the PO, also better KPS’s, improvement in the activities of daily living, and lower anxiety-depression rates. Conclusion. Assessment pre and postoperative times, has become in a valuable tool to base lines establishment in nervous system tumors patients, and it has been demonstrated that the cognitive impairments come from the tumor effect and not from neurosurgical treatment. In regards of that, it’s possible to think and try new surgical approaches.
