ABSTRACT

Introduction. At present time the main complication in kidney transplant patients are the infections because of suppress immunologic state of these. Objective. To establish the frequency and etiology of infections in kidney transplant patients during the first six months after transplant surgery in the Hospital Juarez de Mexico. Material and methods. This study was retrospective, observational and was made between 1993 and 2006; we described the frequency and etiology of infections in transplant patients and other variables like immunosuppressive agents, age, sex, origin donation and laboratory studies. Results. We revised 150 expedients incorporating 49 of them. We observed 22 (44%) patients with infections, the most frequent site of infection was the urinary tract whit eight (36%) cases and the bacterial infection was the most frequent cause of infection being the E. coli the predominant microorganism present. We observed that the patients with cadaver graft source and the used of monoclonal antibodies present more infections. The mortality was of 4%, one patient death was secondary to CMV infection and other for Acinetobacter baumanni. Conclusions. The results were similar to literature reports. It will be necessary the realization of more studies to decrease transplant infections frequency.
