ABSTRACT

Hand surgery worldwide has a long history. Starting with great contributions of historical figures as Hipocrates and in the twentieth century Ste rling Bunell in the USA. In Mexico was until 1940' s with the visit of Dr. Bunell in wich the boom of these speciality began between orthoped ics and plastie surgeons. Later in this Country, seminaries organ ized by doctors as Mario Gonzalez Ulloa having visitors as Dr. W. J. Littler and others important American surgeons transmited their knowledge to 120 mexican, center and south american surgeons. In 1963, it is introduced the first book of hand surgery. In 1980 the Mexican association was founded. Dr. Jorge Gonzalez Rentería established the first service of hand surgery at the Colonia Hospital, and between his greatest contributions are the books "Tratamiento de las lesiones agudas de la mano" and "Atlas de Cirugía de la Mano". Currently services are being hand surgery in various hospitals and private health sector in the country, campaigns are conducted outside of surgery at the nati onal leve l.
