ABSTRACT

Sonohysterography is a simple ultrasonographic procedure that can be used to evaluate the endometrium. A 5F catheter in the cervical canal is used with subsequent instillation of sterile saline solution, under ultrasonographic observation. It is a procedure usually well tolerated by patients and complications are rare. Sonohysterography shows focal processes (polyps, carcinomas), diffuse processes (endometrial hyperplasia or secretory endometrium), or both focal and diffuse. If the process is focal, it can be viewed directly and a biopsy can be taken; if the process is diffuse, a blind biopsy can be taken in ambulatory patients. Because sonohysterography allows us to distinguish between focal and diffuse abnormalities, it helps the clinician evaluate the next step in patient management, planning the best alternative based on costs and benefits.
