ABSTRACT

Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the standard for evaluation of macular thickness. Retinal thickness in our population is lower than the international reference, it has not been defined whether this difference is related to variables of the study acquisition (mydriatics, flash, eye color). Aim: To identify if mydriatics, flash and eye color selection cause a significant modification of center point thickness (CPT) and macular volume measured with OCT. Material and methods. Non interventional, prospective, comparative, cross sectional study. An OCT was obtained in diabetic patients with dark iris color, without ocular fundus alterations, using four acquisition modalities: 1) Without mydriatics without flash, measurement for dark eyes. 2) With mydriatics without flash, measurement for dark eyes. 3) With mydriatics with flash, measurement for dark eyes. 4) With mydriatics with flash, measurement for light eyes. CPT and macular volume were compared between acquisition modalities using analysis of variance. Results. 30 eyes were evaluated. Mean GPC was: first acquisition modality: 155.6 ± 18.25 μm, second 163.17 ± 20.86 μm, third 155.87 ± 18.85 μm, fourth 161.37 ± 19.35 (p = 0.3). Mean macular volume was: first acquisition modality 6.69 ± 0.4 mm3, second 6.75 ± 0.39 mm3, third 6.72 ± 0.42 mm3, and fourth 6.68 ± 0.39 mm3 (p = 0.9). Discussion. The changes in OCT acquisition modality did not induce significant differences either in CPT or macular volume values. The difference identified between national studies and the international reference is not related to measurement inconsistency.
