ABSTRACT

Introduction: The management of vascular injuries is a big challenge in trauma surgery. The vascular injuries of the superior extremities only occur in 1/3 ofthe vascular peripherial lesions.
Material and methods: We reported the experience in our clinic Clínica Médica Quirúrgica Candia in Puebla, on the management of the superior extremities injuries in a period included of January 2002 to March 2008. All were men in ages between 10 to 45 years.
Results: The arterial trauma presented in 7/60 patients with trauma in the superior extremities, the injury mechanism was: penetrating injury in five patients and two with closed trauma. 6/7 patients with injuries on the right side, the arterial injuries in volved axilar artery (1), humeral arteries (2), ulnar arteries (2), radial arteries (2), 100% with nerves injuries, 5/7 with bone injuries, 5/7 venous major injuries and 6/7 sinew injuries.
Discussion: Most patients with vascular injuries and that required surgery are diagnosed being based in hard and soft sings.
Conclusion: Good result can be obtained with the immediate arterial repair, with immediate venous reconstruction if there is an injury in major venous and an early fasciotomy if it is necessary. In the present new surgical techniques exist and new materials for the repair of this kind of injuries.
