ABSTRACT
This part is a study of some of the prominent technical and pedagogical principles in education and their role in surgery´s educational change. Brief analysis of the most important and significant theories in educational psychology, such as Bloom’s taxonomy of learning domains; Fitts and Posner’s motor skills learning model and its stages, and other related concepts as «explicit»” and «implicit» learning. Some recent findings on the neurological bases in the acquisition of psychomotor skills; the importance of the phenomenon of ‘attention’ and «automation of skills». Discussion regarding the famous «learning curve» and the importance of transferring it from the operating room to the simulator, and finally: a brief discussion about Ericsson’s «deliberate practice”» model as a fundamental strategy in the acquisition of technical skills.
Methods: We conducted an online search through Medline, Pubmed NCBI, Google Scholar, medigraphic and Wikipedia, using the key words: «surgical education», «surgical teaching», «simulators in surgery», «surgical competencies», «research methodology», «theories of learning», «psychomotor skills learning» and by consultation of some original books on the subject.
