ABSTRACT

Malignant melanoma is a pigmented neoplasm that appears more commonly in the skin and it is rarely seen arising in the oral tissues. It is an aggressive neoplasm with high metastatic capacity and since it has a great recurrence rate, the life of the patient is at risk. The aim of this paper is to present a case of a malignant melanoma arising in the gingiva of a 35 year-old man and to remark the need to diagnose this neoplasm of those pigmented entities commonly found in the oral soft tissues as: nevi, racial pigmentation, amalgam tattoo and related with systemic diseases (Addison disease) or hereditary diseases (Peutz-Jeghers syndrome).
