ABSTRACT

Transmigration of the mandibular canine is a rare dental disorder peculiar to the mandibular arch. Impacted mandibular canines occur approximately 20 times less often than impacted maxillary canines. Even less common is the migration of a tooth across the midline. A canine is classified as «transmigrated» when one half or more of its length has crossed the midline. The etiology and precise mechanism of the transmigration remains unclear, although a number of explanatory factors have been suggested. Most cases occur in females and involve asymptomatic and impacted teeth, commonly the left canines. These are usually diagnosed within the first two decades of life. The purpose of this article is to report the case of a 15-year-old boy with a transmigrated permanent right canine and to present a review of the literature. Moreover, this is the first clinical case to be reported in Mexico.
