Characteristics of Autistic children behavior diagnosed at the Pediatric and University Hospital “Juan Manuel Marquez”

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the infant autism is a disorder hard to diagnose due to the great variety of its manifestations. According to the author´s opinion, there are alterations frequently expressed through the children´s behavior, while other manifestations not always are observed.
Objective: to characterize the behavior of a group of autistic children diagnosed with infant and atypical autism during the period1991 to 2006 at the service of Mental Health of the Pediatric and University Hospital “Juan Manuel Marquez” from Havana.
Methods: A transversal, retrospective and quantity study was carried out on a sample of twenty five children on which was applied the On Infant Autism Assessment Scale. Descriptive statistical was used also using absolute and relative frequency.
Results: Erratic response to sounds was the behavior more frequently observed on 92% of the children, the poor grimace observed on the 88% of them, poor imitation expressed on 72% , the hands’ stereotype , the immature and poor play , the evade looking persons ‘eyes and the reverie are the present characteristics on more of 60% of the studied sample.
Conclusions: The alterations with a high degree of severity were in the communicative area (verbal and non verbal) and in the irritation. The most common behaviors were the erratic response to sounds, the unable condition to established communication through gesture and the imitation of patterns, difficulties in the development of play and hands’ stereotype.
