ABSTRACT

Background: health and work are closely related; work is an activity developed by the individual to satisfy his needs and gain a decent life, it is also the environment in which his physical and psychological capacities are developed. Heart diseases, and specifically acute myocardial infarct, are the most frequent causes that make the individual to stay away from work.
Objective: to describe the behavior of work return of patients who suffered from a myocardial infarct.
Method: a descriptive, longitudinal, observational study was conducted with a universe of 106 patients that had suffered from acute myocardial infarct from July to December 2010 and were from the health areas of the Teaching Community Policlinics Carlos J. Finlay, MD and Joaquin de Agüero, in Camagüey. The non-probabilistic sample was composed of 81 patients.
Results: most of the patients that had return to work were between 48 and 53 years old. The 69.2 % of the reinstated patients managed to adjust the work to their needs. A 75 % of them received cardiovascular rehabilitation after suffering from a cardiac infarct.
Conclusions: patients that were in the age group of 48 to 53 years old met a great satisfaction at work, were able to adjust the work activity to their needs, received a comprehensive cardiovascular rehabilitation, and made up the greatest group to return to work.
