ABSTRACT

Introduction. Clubfoot is a complex deformity of multifactorial etiology and difficult correction with tendency to relapse. Objective. To evaluate the functional condition in patient with club foot surgical correction and to identify the time of beginning of the conservative treatment (CxT) and surgical treatment (ST). Methodology. 31 patients were included (13 females and 18 males), with surgery between 1996-2003, in the Centro Nacional de Rehabilitación (CNR), range of age of 4 to 7 years old. We used the Bensahel and Dimeglio functional scale (which evaluate functional, morphological radiological areas). Results. From the evaluated areas, we obtained worse scores in the radiological area (63%), followed by the functional (57.1%) and morphological (45.8%). CxT began between the 11 and 20 days (42%), the ST before the first year (35%), 32% required second surgery. The functional assessment showed worse results when CxT was started after 20 days of age. In patients older than 2 years who underwent surgery, morphological evaluation showed worse results and in cases of second surgery functional assessment was the most affected in older than 3 years. Discussion. The patients with handling initial to more age present higher scores that show a worse functionality and relapses of the treatment. Conclusion. The age of beginning of the CxT and ST are a parameter that defines the functional state to long term.
