ABSTRACT

Background: Professional choice and its relation to personality have been topic of several investigations. The focus of these studies in the choice of medical specialty allows observing that certain groups of specialists show similar personality traits and styles that suggest personality could have an impact on the career choice.
Objective: To conduct a psychological assessment prior to admission of candidates for specialties and subspecialties of Cardiology in order to know whether there are significant differences in personality between these groups.
Material and method: An observational comparative study was done with 1,276 national and foreign residents aspiring to cardiologic specialties and subspecialties. Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-version 1), which gives information about personality traits and psychological disorders, was applied.
Results: Some significant differences (p ‹ 0.05) were found among studied groups and some personality traits, especially while comparing by sex, nationality, specialties and subspecialties.
Conclusions: Choice of medical specialty depends on different factors, including personality. There are some important differences between candidates for specialty and subspecialty in Cardiology. Recognizing these traits will contribute to the study of psychological profiles needed for having a successful medical practice that provide patients a better attention.
