ABSTRACT
Objective:To describe a case of appendicular tumor secondary to chronic appendicitis.
Setting:Third level health care hospital.
Description of the case:Woman of 41 years, coursing with intestinal constipation. Chronic symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, hyporexia, slightly feverish, treated with antibiotics, antiparasitics, analgesics, and antispasmodics, with slight partial improvement; however, for a year she persisted with chronic pain in the lower abdomen, predominating on the right side. Due to these symptoms she went to our hospital, where an exploratory laparoscopy was performed, finding a tumor that occluded the lumen of the cecum due to chronic appendicitis. The cecum was resected and 20 cm of the terminal ileum with ileostomy. The histopathological report corresponded to a tumor in the cecum secondary to chronic appendicitis.
Conclusion:The anatomopathological characteristics and the clinical manifestations of chronic appendicitis differ from those of acute appendicitis. The criteria to diagnose a chronic appendicitis include: symptoms of more than 4 weeks of evolution, confirmation of the inflammation through histopathological examination, resolution of the symptoms after appendectomy.
