ABSTRACT

Introduction:We present the most relevant aspects of the etiology, characteristics, and different handling strategies of ventral hernias.
Material and methods:Five references and seven surgery books were reviewed, complementing with statistical data from the cases at our hospital.
Conclusions:Ventral hernias –epigastric, umbilical, ventro-lateral, and lumbar– constitute a chapter of abdominal wall surgery of a not too frequent pathology, corresponding to: Epigastric, 0.7% (more frequent in men); umbilical, 2.4% (more frequent in women); ventro-lateral, 0.3%; of all the hernias operated by our group. Their etiology and pathogenesis is anatomo-congenital and their solution is surgical with or without prosthesis, according to each case. Following this behavior, our recurrence index has been of 0.3%.
