Sialolithiasis.

ABSTRACT

Sialolithiasis is an unusual disease, which appears more frequently in male patients and affects more commonly the major salivary glands. Clinically, it is seen as a hard or firm, movable and sometimes painful swelling. A case of sialolithiasis in a 20 yr old patient with an asymptomatic lesion one-year duration, located in one of the sublingual glands is reported. Surgical excision of the calculus was done with no posterior complications and histopathologic analysis of the specimen was performed. One-year follow-up showed no clinical and radiographic evidence of recurrence. In the discussion, an analysis on the main clinical features, treatment and prognosis of this disease is presented. Also, it is pointed out that the treatment should be done by an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
