ABSTRACT

Tricuspid valve endocarditis is rare and usually associated with the use of intravenous drugs or intravascular dispositives. Although it is recognized that infection of the tricuspid valve does occur in healthy people with no other known risk factors, then is thought to be extremely rare. Uncomplicated tricuspid valve endocarditis can be successfully medical treated in 80% of patients, in the remaining 20%, with very large vegetation such as in the presented case, surgical treatment is required. We present the case of a previously healthy young woman who arrived to the intensive care unit with sepsis, nodular lung infiltrates and tricuspid endocarditis, the blood cultures were positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The patient was treated with linezolid and the infected tricuspid valve was replaced with a biological heart valve, the patient recovered uneventfully.
