ABSTRACT
Introduction: The water sorption and porosity of denture base resins affect their mechanical properties.
Objective: To compare the water sorption and freedom from porosity of three denture base resins: ProBase Hot, Lucitone 199, and Nictone, in accordance with ISO 1567.
Materials and methods: Five specimens of each of the acrylic resins were prepared in accordance with ISO specification 1567 to evaluate water sorption (µg/mm
3), and 4 of each resin for freedom from porosity, which was analyzed by two previously calibrated observers (kappa = 0.85). Statistical analysis was performed using a one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, and
χ
2 (alpha 0.05). Water sorption was calculated by drying and hydrating the specimens using the ISO 1567 sorption formula.
Results: Nictone obtained the highest level of water sorption (31.05 µg/mm
3), close to the upper limit of the ISO 1567 standard of 32 µg/mm
3. Statistically significant differences were identified between Nictone and the two other resins used in the study (p
‹ 0.05). The water sorption of Lucitone 199 was 27.91µg/mm
3 and that of ProBase Hot was 27.6 µg/mm
3. In the freedom from porosity test, ProBase Hot and Nictone produced 8 specimen strips with no defects. Lucitone 199 produced 11 strips with no porosity (91.7%).
Conclusions: The water sorption values of all three acrylic resins comply with ISO 1567. Freedom from porosity proved to be compliant only in the case of Lucitone 199.
