ABSTRACT

In short-term studies have been reported negative associations between calcium intake and body mass index, fat percentage and waist circumference. This study analyzed the effects of subchronic intake of calcium in the diet, body weight and metabolism of lipids, in four groups of rats. Control: rodent diet. Fat: 24 % enriched (g/g) with butter. Calcium: administering 1,200 mg/kg/day and combination fat + calcium. Observed that weight gain and increased abdominal fat for fat group (p ‹ 0.05) vs. calcium, fat + calcium group decreased body weight and abdominal fat during treatment, inferring a possible decrease fat absorption, when performing stool analysis showed an increase of fat in those groups that were treated with calcium, linking them less absorption in the intestine. There was no difference in the lipid profile.
