ABSTRACT

Introduction. Internal jugular phlebectasia is presented as a fusiform dilatation of the vein. Hard to find in adulthood, because the diagnosis is realized during childhood. Dilatation provided due to the thinness of the walls in veins, outcoming clearer in situations that increases the pressure in veins.
Clinical case. 35 y/o female, clinical course of pulsation in the right side of neck for 4 years, decreased applying pressure on the right internal carotid. Physical examination: swelling on the right side of neck, increasing with Valsalva’s manoeuvre, colour Doppler ultrasound of carotid was performed, revealing a swelling in internal jugular vein, treatment is conservative if symptoms are tolerable, unless there were complications, then the surgical resection its suggested.
Conclusion. Is important that general medicians know this entity and suspects it in the differential diagnosis of swelling or abnormal mass in the neck, to avoid realization of invasive or unnecessary tests in patients.
