ABSTRACT

Acute mesenteric ischemia was described for the first time in 1895. It is an infrequent pathology but its mortality is very high. There are four kinds of presentation: arterial embolism, arterial thrombosis, non-occlusive, and venous thrombosis. Also there’s a chronic presentation characterized mainly by atherosclerotic plaques. The diagnosis is sometimes complicated and can be confused with other forms of abdominal disease. The gold standard for the diagnosis is the CT scan angiography. Management generally consists in open * Médico General, Código 12061 Universidad de Costa Rica. Today endovascular therapy is gaining more importance but there aren’t enough studies yet to know its true potential.
