Cardiological screening in Mexico City. Does it have the same validity that a sea level?

ABSTRACT
Screening for Critical Congenital Heart Disease is a technique that consists in obtaining preductus and postductus saturation with pulseoximetry; the purpose is to detect cyanotic heart diseases potentially fatal. The algorithm for this technique was based in studies in cities near the sea level, however in Mexico City at 2,240 meters above sea level, the value of these screening remains unknown. Hundred and fifty children born at Hospital Angeles del Pedregal were studied, 7/150 were false positive (4%), way above than reported in literature (0.14%), these children were followed up for a year ruled out from a congenital heart disease, the false positive children were resuscitated with room air, and show lower saturation and a great number of false positive 5/7 (71.4%), saturation at 10 minutes do not keep any relation with saturation at 48 hours. We believe that the recommended cardiac screening algorithm must be modified before mass application in cities at high altitude.
