ABSTRACT

Intellectual disability is a serious health problem in all countries, irrespective of their level of development. There is an antecedent of population-based studies, performed through an active investigation in the Republic of Cuba and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, though there are no antecedents of any similar investigation in the Republic of Ecuador. The objective of this investigation was to identify the main causes of intellectual disabilities in the country, through a demographic cross-sectional descriptive study on all people with intellectual disabilities. In the period June 2009-December 2010, 68 687 people with intellectual disabilities were studied, representing a rate of 0,57 per 100 persons. Out of them, 33,10 % were interconsulted by clinical geneticists, of whom 95 % were consulted for the first time in this specialty. The prenatal and perinatal causes identified more than 80 % of cases with mental retardation, predominantly in the Amazon region and the coast.
