ABSTRACT
Background: The incidence of influenza B varies greatly each season. Objective: To identify differences in the frequency of positive rapid tests for influenza B in the Hospital Angeles Pedregal (HAP) compared to Mexico and United States of America.
Material and method: A retrospective and epidemiological surveillance study was done with patients attending to Hospital Angeles Pedregal, Mexico City, in 2012, all of whom were submitted to rapid influenza test (QuickVue Influenza A + B test®).
Results: Comparing the data of 22,030 RT-PCR tests reported for Mexico by the Pan American Health Organization vs 276,011 RT-PCR tests reported for United States by the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System of the World Health Organization, we observed a statistically significant higher percentage of tests rapid positive to influenza B in the Hospital Angeles Pedregal regarding United States: 7.19 vs 3.31, p = 0.01.
Conclusion: Influenza B was more frequent in rapid testing of the population attending at Hospital Angeles Pedregal than in the RT-PCR tests in United States
