ABSTRACT
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the galvanic current and the low intensity laser in the healing of the diabetic foot ulcers. Material and methods: This is a comparative, longitudinal, prospective, and not aleatory clinic study. Fifteen diabetic patients with foot ulcers were admitted and divided in three groups. The Ankle-arm index and the sizes of the ulcers were measured at the beginning and the end of the study for all patients. The first group called control was treated with standard treatment, the second group received galvanic electrostimulation for 20 sessions of l5 minutes each and the third group was treated with laser applied in points at a dose of 10 J/cm2 with a frequency of 10,000 Htz for 20 sessions. Results: We found an improvement in ulcer size of 35.8% for the control group, 47.2% for the electrostimulation group and 57.2% for the laser group. There was a significant statistical difference only for the electrostimulation group compared with the control after treatment (P = 0.05). There was not a significant statistical difference for the leg to arm index for any group. Conclusion: A treatment with galvanic current at a subumbral dose improves the healing of diabetic foot ulcers; however the laser treatment does not modify their evolution.REFERENCES
