ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the clinical and epidemiological differences of the facial nerve injury when it occurs proximal and distal to the nerve chorda tympanum. Material and methods: Comparative survey based on files of patients with facial palsy that attended to the CREE Durango from January 2002 to December 2003, in which it was possible to deduce the injury level. Statistical analysis was made with Microsoft Excel for Windows XP and Epi-Info 3.2.2 and inferencial statistics with a confidence level of 95%. Results: 152 files were analyzed. The lesion was proximal to the chorda tympanum 57.2%. The most frequent symptom for the suprachordal lesion was epiphora, with a frequency of 51% while in the infrachordal lesion the frequency was 30.3% with a significative difference with a confidence interval IC95%7.24, 34.16. It is still necessary to identify the origin of this difference. There was not other significative differences between the groups in the other variables analyzed.REFERENCES
