ABSTRACT

Background: The classification of Samsoon and Young is a method to predict difficult airway requires that the patient is in a sitting position, this position may not always be suitable for all patients. Objectives: Compare the degrees of Samsoon and Young in sitting position and lying to find out which is more predictive of difficult airway. Materials: Was performed in 215 patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia, for 16 months. The evaluation was performed in sitting and lying position. Grade III or IV is defined as predictor of difficult airway. The degree of laryngoscopy was assessed by Cormack and Lehane classification, Samsoon y Young III and IV was assumed as difficult intubation. Statistical measures, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were used for comparison of the two positions. Results: Mallampati III and IV 71 (33.0%) patients in sitting position and 110 (51.1%) patients in supine position were found. Sensitivity and specificity, sitting 73% and 29%, 78% and 48% lying. Positive predictive value 73% sitting and lying 75%. Negative predictive value 70% sitting and lying 51%. Conclusion: We found that Samsoon y Young score of lying has higher prediction of difficult airway.
