ABSTRACT
Background: Removable dental prostheses are an alternative option in the treatment of missing teeth. However, these can cause damage to the supporting tissues. Factors such as reduced salivary flow, roughness, micropores on the surface of the acrylic used in the prosthesis, trauma, changes in pH or immunological deterioration, and poor fit and lack of stability are considered contributing factors in the development of lesions in the oral mucosa.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of oral lesions associated with the use of removable acrylic dentures in patients at a health center in the community of Kantunil, Yucatán.
Material and methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional prospective study was carried out at the Rural Health Center in the community of Kantunil, Yucatán, involving 62 patients with acrylic dentures, who were examined over the period from February 2011 to January 2012. The data collected were processed using SPSS Version 15 for the descriptive statistics, differential, and χ
2.
Results: The most common oral lesion was denture stomatitis (32.3%). The prevalence of fibrous hyperplasia was 14.5%, angular cheilitis 12.9%, erythroplasia 9.7%, and leukoplakia 4.8%. Lesions in the oral mucosa were present in 25.8% of the population. A statistically significant correlation between the presence of oral lesions and prosthetic hygiene (p ‹ 0.05) was found. 45.16% of patients do not clean their dentures (33-38). A correlation was also found between the presence of the prosthesis and the occurrence of oral lesions.
Conclusions: 75.8% of the population studied had oral lesions caused by their prosthesis. Dentists should inform their patients regarding the use and proper handling of their dentures, and perform regular checkups.
