ABSTRACT
Introduction: Adolescence is a stage in which young people are vulnerable and exposed to psychoactive substances that harm the stomatognathic system. For this reason, we decided to carry out a descriptive epidemiological study of oral lesions in adolescent patients using the Stomatology Service at the «Dr. Ramón Carrillo» Dental Hospital. Material and methods: We carried out a descriptive epidemiological study of 266 patients over a period of six months, during which time the following data were collected: sex, age, tobacco use, alcohol use, drug use, and oral lesions. Results: A total of 266 patients were examined: 156 females (59%) and 110 males (41%). 20 of the female patients (12.82%) were psychoactive substance users, as were 36 of the males (32.72%). 9 (3.38%) of the female patients that used psychoactive substances had oral lesions, as did 32 (12.03%) of their male counterparts. 11 (4.13%) the female patients that used psychoactive substances had no oral lesions, whereas the figure for male patients was 4 (1.50%). The prevalence of oral lesions in patients that used such substances was 72%. Discussion: While psychoactive substance use does not act as a trigger for diseases of the oral cavity, it is a risk factor in the oral health of adolescent patients. The prevalence of oral lesions found in this study is consistent with that reported in other publications. Whilst the prevalence of patients that used such substances we found was not high, the prevalence of lesions in these patients was. Conclusion: We need to reduce the risk factors and seek to educate adolescents to ensure that they have the criteria they need for them to maintain a healthier lifestyle.REFERENCES
