Clinical condition of the children at birth in mothers with older age

ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the health problems of newborns with elderly mother. Children of elderly women have more chance of having illnesses caused by adverse conditions, such as intrauterine growth retardation and prematurity, risk factors including maternal conditions.
Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional descriptive study, newborns elderly women born between March 2012 and February 2013 and entered the area of neonatology.
Results: In the study period 59 children born to elderly women and admitted to the hospital neonatology (ISSSTE); the average age of mothers was 38.8 years, and of these eight were primiparous; 14 cases of hypertensive disease of pregnancy and 11 of diabetes mellitus; in 29 of these children were born prematurely and 27 of these were intrauterine growth retardation, 41 had two or more clinical risk conditions.
Conclusion: Pregnancies elderly women per se involve serious health problems for them as well as for children; children as prematurity was the leading cause of hospitalization.
