ABSTRACT

Objective: Assess the distribution and frequency of some characteristics of primary dentition and assess the possible risk propitiated by the development of any kind of malocclusion. Material and methods: An epidemiological, observational, descriptive, transversal and prolective survey was held in 193 preschool children from Delegación Iztapalapa were examined. Baume criteria was used to assess the kind of terminal plane and arcade, for dental caries WHO’s criteria was applied. Applicants were calibrated according to Cohen’s parameters, resulting in this almost perfect (K = 83%, Ca = 91% and Cr = 82%). Results: 36.6% from preschool children presented deep interproximal caries lesions and/or premature tooth loss, it was observed that there was no dependency of these variables related to age (H = 0.0928341, p = 0.937691) and sex (U = 0.04867, p = 0.0973127). 81.9% showed straight and mesial terminal planes and 75.1% arcade type 1. Conclusions: According to these results, the sample showed low risk to develop any kind of malocclusion. Thus, the multifactorial nature of this process in which some other factors can have a major influence on occlusion development.
