ABSTRACT

Halitosis, besides being a frequent condition which everyone suffers once in a life time, the dentist is the professional most involved with it. People who suffer of halitosis look for a solution in a wide variety of commercial products which promise to keep bad breath away, but they only really cover the problem. Halitosis and periodontal disease are a worldwide health problem. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between halitosis and the severity of periodontal disease. A transversal study was performed on 200 patients, the primary inquiry was bad breath. A halimeter was used to measure the Sulfur Volatil Compounds (SVC) and its association with periodontal disease 19.3% of the patients with halitosis presented periodontal disease, 43.2% systemic problems and 6% emotional problems. In 31.5% the SVC was less than 300 parts per billion (ppb).
