Attitudes of the pregnat women towards the dental treatment

ABSTRACT

The supportive and educative strategies that are supposed to maintain oral health, have become part of health politics in Mexico and pregnant women are now taken into consideration. Nevertheless the course of time has shown that in our culture, the dental care of pregnant women has been put aside by different thoughts and practices. The uncomfortable way of treatment and the fear that surrounds it, have caused a decrease in dental attention, in spite of this being a first priority group by the Health Society (Secretaria de Salud). One thousand surveys were performed by the students of Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Mexico City and the State of Mexico; special methods were used, with prior evaluation by the authors. Objectives: a) Knowing the attitude of the pregnant women towards the dental treatment. b) Collecting opinions on dental treatment among pregnant women. c) Describing the reasons given by the pregnant women for not following dental treatment. d) Knowing the fraction of women who ask for dental care during the pregnancy. e) Evaluate the correlation between the answers of these questions and the age and education of the patients. The conclusions of this investigation are: to strengthen the education programs on a massive level, unify criteria of perinatal dentistry and create support for health education at a private level as well as other letters of attention in health.
