ABSTRACT

Follicular unit extraction is a minimally invasive technique for hair transplant, which consists in the direct extraction, with a small punch, of the follicular units from the donor area. Advantages: minimum postoperative discomfort, shorter time to recover, and absence of linear donor scaring.
This article describes in detail the indications and contraindications of this procedure. Techniques for the extraction of the follicular units, the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of each one of them, including the transection index and buried hairs that are the main technical complications. General considerations for patients selection, are also included.
