ABSTRACT

Purpose: Review of the management of choledocholithiasis by laparoscopy. The laparoscopic bile duct exploration is a safe and effective technique, which can be an alternative of first choice for the management of choledocholithiasis. It has remained unpopular between surgeons and limited by the experience and enthusiasm of laparoscopic surgeon. Overall the success of both treatment options (ERCP preop + cholecystectomy versus cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration) is statistically the same, however morbidity, hospital stay and costs are slightly lower in the one-step approach. By the time, this approach will continue to be an excellent treatment option for those who have the resources and above all the experience and surgical skills to ensure success.
