ABSTRACT

Solution of sodium hypochlorite are widely used as an irrigant agent in endodontic practice because of its solvent activity for both necrotic and vital tissues and its ability to act as an antiseptic. However, it is well known that it can produce severe inflammatory reactions on underlying vital tissues; hence, it must be confined to the root canal. It was the purpose of this paper to review complications induced by sodium hypochlorite solution, and to present a case report of an accidental infiltration of this chemical solution into soft tissues that caused bone necrosis, loss of the teeth and an oro-antral communication.
