ABSTRACT

Neonatal jaundice remains a common pathological condition in newborns and one of the leading causes of hospitalization during the first week of life. The Kernicterus is a preventable cause of cerebral palsy if hyperbilirubinemia is found early, therefore, because now children are being discharged at an early age should be considered a screening for BST or BTc, because visual assessment it is not always reliable, and to educate mothers about feeding, 8-12 times a day to ensure adequate caloric intake. The treatment is performed according to the Guidelines issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2004, which help determine the most effective treatment between phototherapy and exchange transfusion.
