ABSTRACT

Topical steroids are still an elective treatment for some cutaneus disordes such as eccema in children even contact dermatitis in adults. Topical steroids were born in the 50s from the hydrocortisone molecule that has been modified throught the years to increase their solubility and their inflammatory and inmmunosupresive potencial as well as to decrease its mineralocorticoid effects. To choose which is the best topical steroid we should consider its therapeutical potencial, the formulation, the extension of the disorder, the type and location of the lesion and the age of the patient. All these to avoid secondary effects and so we can improve the benefits. We as doctors have to consider that topical steroids can be combined with antibiotics, urea, salicic acid, vitamin D depending in the disorder. The key is to know in which patient and in which specific pathology is the steroid indicated.
