ABSTRACT

Introduction: Heart failure is a chronic and progressive disease that affects much of the world’s population and requires the development of self-care practices on the part of patients to prevent disease progression and frequent hospitalizations. Objective: To reflect on the self-care of patients with heart failure in the light of the theoretical model proposed by Dorothea Orem. Material and methods: Bibliographic study by adopting the method of integrative review, publications were searched in the databases LILACS and BIREME, 10 articles were included for analysis and discussion in full. Results: We observed that self-care is a fundamental aspect in the monitoring and treatment of patients with heart failure, emerging four distinct categories: the need for health education in patients with heart failure; the importance of self-care for patients with heart failure, the assessment of the person and the family in its social context for the treatment of heart failure, efforts to improve self-care of patients with heart failure. Conclusion: It was shown that self-care based on Orem’s theory promotes learning, knowledge and understanding of the patient and family regarding the disease and become important factors for treatment adherence.
